Regulators Scrutinize Life Insurance Premium Hikes Amid Consumer Concerns

APRA and ASIC Evaluate Industry's Response to Premium Increase Issues

Regulators Scrutinize Life Insurance Premium Hikes Amid Consumer Concerns?w=400

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) have jointly reviewed life insurers' practices concerning premium increases, aiming to ensure they align with policy terms and meet reasonable policyholder expectations.

In December 2022 and December 2023, the regulators expressed concerns that frequent, large, and unexpected premium increases may not have been applied in accordance with policy terms and could fail to meet policyholder expectations. This prompted a comprehensive review of the industry's practices.

The latest assessment indicates that life insurers have made progress in improving re-rating practices, marketing and disclosure materials, and product governance. However, actions to address increasing premium volatility through product design are still at an early stage. Given the recency of these actions, it is too early to fully assess their effectiveness in reducing the frequency and size of premium increases.

APRA and ASIC emphasise the importance of life insurers ensuring their products meet consumers' needs, offer reasonable premium stability over the policy's lifetime, and continuously manage consumer expectations regarding premium increases. Both regulators will continue to engage with individual life companies where further improvements are needed.

This ongoing scrutiny underscores the regulators' commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring the life insurance industry operates transparently and fairly, particularly concerning premium practices.
